School remembers its sons

A cross section of pupils from all the age groups at Wisbech Grammar School gathered together to mark the eleventh hour of the eleventh month (on Wednesday).

The list of past pupils who fell in the two world wars was read out, together with the names of members of the school community who had died more recently – Major Christopher Dockerty, who had been serving as an intelligence staff officer in Northern Ireland when he died in the crash of an RAF Chinook helicopter in the Mull of Kintyre, and Lance Corporal Alex Hawkins, who lost his life in Afghanistan as he was leading his men home from a routine patrol in Helmand province.

A wreath of poppies and commemorative crosses were laid at the war memorials by Emily Wood (12) and Jordan Morgan (17) and the last post and reveille were played by Matthew Ekins, whose 17th birthday coincided with the anniversary of armistice day.

Among those joining in the service were the parents of Alex Hawkins, Jan and Bob Hawkins.
